Are you using a message preview pane? Not using a preview pane results no open mails. To not use a message preview pane: Settings -> Configure KMail -> Appearance -> Layout -> Do not show a message preview pane (In reply to comment #1) > Are you using a message preview pane? > > Not using a preview pane results no open mails. > > To not use a message preview pane: > > Settings -> Configure KMail -> Appearance -> Layout -> Do not show a message > preview pane Are you talking about the message view that's right underneath the message list? I want to keep that there -- I find that easier and quicker than having to open a separate window to view a message. I just think there should be a way to disable auto-opening messages when that pane is there. Yes, that is to what I was referring. Having a no preview option requires not selecting a message in the list. Although I appreciate the request, seems somewhat counterintuitive to me. Seems using the preview pane implies, um, well, previewing. :) Do you know of other mail clients that support such a feature? Might be easier to see how others have done this. Seems > using the preview pane implies, um, well, previewing. :) <snip> To me, the word "preview" in reference to email would mean to view part of the message before opening it, like how Gmail's web interface displays the first part of the message body as a part of the subject in the message list (in the format of "$From $Subject - $FirstPartOfBody $Date"). However, Kmail's "preview" pane displays the whole message, AND marks the message as read. If I don't want to open a message, I don't want it marked as read. Personally, I don't see how this is counterintuitive, especially for those of us on laptops and netbooks, or are otherwise stuck with a small screen. Think about it: take away the preview pane, and you require a separate window to view the email. That's two windows (Kmail's main windows, plus the email). If you need to reply, that's a 3rd window. Plus maybe you were typing an email to someone else, but the email you're now replying to is more important. Plus maybe a web browser, e.g. if you need to look something up for your email. Plus possibly any chats you have going on. Plus......... I realize for some people, one extra window won't make a difference, but I personally tend to keep a lot of apps open, and there's only so much space my screen has, plus my tiny brain can only handle sorting through so many windows at once, so I try to keep the number of actual windows at a minimum. Your explanation makes sense. If we can find another client as an example that might save us some "conceptual" time. (In reply to comment #5) > Your explanation makes sense. All we'd be doing is sticking an option in Kmail settings to disable auto-opening of messages within the preview pane. The option would probably be best under either Appearance or Misc. |
