By default, Bugzilla does not search the list of RESOLVED bugs.
You can force it to do so by putting the upper-case word ALL in front of your search query, e.g.: ALL tdelibs
We recommend searching for bugs this way, as you may discover that your bug has already been resolved and fixed in a later release.

Bug 1232

Summary: KDM in 3.5.13.1 requires Ctrl+Alt+Del

Description Alexis PM 2012-09-20 13:36:58 CDT
I just upgraded to 3.5.13.1 (Slavek repo: deb http://ppa.quickbuild.pearsoncomputing.net/slavek-banko/axis/ubuntu squeeze
main) and now KDM requieres me to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to begin.
Although I understand security reasons, I find it very puzzling for novices (eg I have found that many newbies do not understand that the symbol "+" refers the keys must press simultaneously - they often think this is a secuency and press the "+" key). Moreover for non-English speakers, because the message is only in English, and the key "Del" is renamed by country (eg in Spain it is common called Supr). Overall and on balance, I propose to remove this new functionality.
Comment 1 Timothy Pearson 2012-09-20 18:48:59 CDT
While the referenced SAK functionality is considered integral to TDE and therefore will not be removed, it can be disabled on a machine via the "Login Manager" KControl module or by manually editing a configuration file.
Comment 2 Timothy Pearson 2012-09-20 19:10:26 CDT
On further consideration, the translation issues are very real and need to be resolved, therefore this bug should remain open to track those issues exclusively.
Comment 3 Slávek Banko 2012-09-20 19:20:24 CDT
In any case, this bug does not seem like blocking for release 3.5.13.1.
Comment 4 Alexis PM 2012-09-21 05:50:42 CDT
I can handle the translation into Spanish, and thus get close this bug quickly in view of the upcoming releases (or not, since I assume should remain open to other languages that provides TDE)

I just installed Trinity yesterday on a new Debian Wheezy install and I cannot login with the TDM. I get that Ctrl+Alt+Del message and when I hit those keys absolutely nothing happens. So I have to kill the DM with /etc/init.d/kdm-trinity stop, then issue startx from the console. It is pretty annoying. So what do I have to do to get rid of that obnoxious stuff? Other than that everything else seems to work OK to me.

To turn off Ctrl+Alt+Del in /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc enable option UseSAK=false.
At this moment I do not have idea why Ctrl+Alt+Del did not work on your machine.

Thanks for the reply. I just checked on that machine and I will make that change on it. If there is any other debugging information that I can supply to help track down the cause I'll be happy to supply it. Although honestly having to give my computer the 3 finger salute in order to login is not my idea of a good time, even if it did work.

That system is my first experience with Debian Wheezy. Up until about 3 days ago I was running Debian Squeeze on it, but I got a new hard drive, so I installed Wheezy on it.

Regardless of my feelings I'd still like to track down the cause because the desktop manager being stone cold dead is not a good first impression. So I'd like to see it fixed. Other than that I love my Trinity! I am running it on 3 different PCs now.

We should make false the default.

Paul, after you kill TDE with "/etc/init.d/tdm-trinity stop" and then issue startx from the console, does the Ctrl+Alt+Del work fine?

Patch proposed in bug 1915.

Thanks Darrell.
Anyhow I would like to see if we can replicate Paul's problem to find also the root cause. For that we need Paul's feedback.
Comment 12 Darrell 2014-02-24 21:10:02 CST
Bug 1915: TDM UseSAK default should be false: patch pushed to git in commit a7e7483a. Does not affect 3.5.13.2 directly, but the patch could be back ported by packagers.
Comment 13 Michele Calgaro 2014-03-05 21:32:53 CST
SAK is now disable as default option.
I am closing this bug.
Paul, should the problem persists, please reopen the bug. If you can replicate this on a regular basis, I would be interested in tracking down the real problem.

The problem is SAK. Because when I did what Slávek Banko suggested, To turn off Ctrl+Alt+Del in /etc/trinity/kdm/kdmrc enable option UseSAK=false I never had another problem.
