Hello, you can already find better multimedia packages in the 3rd party "rpmfusion" repository. Look here: http://rpmfusion.org/ This is where I download the mad and xine libraries for CentOS, among other things. When 3.5.13.2 is out, I will update the wiki installation page. I have already tried xine from rpmfusion. In fact, I've cycled through all the 3rd party repos on CentOS' wiki list with xine and libdvd*, none of them seem to work as far as gaining DVD support in xine. The only solution that has worked for me is to install SMPlayer, however personally I think Kaffeine is better (at least when the backends all work). OK I've found that the missing codecs are found in package "xine-lib-extras-freeworld", alas, RPMFusion repository does not provide it for RHEL/CentOS. I've found the package exist, provided by "nux" repository. First, you must install "xine-lib" and "xine-lib-extras", then you can download an install manually the following package: For i386: http://li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/i386/xine-lib-extras-freeworld-1.1.18.1-1.el6.nux.i686.rpm For x86_64 : http://li.nux.ro/download/nux/dextop/el6/x86_64/xine-lib-extras-freeworld-1.1.18.1-1.el6.nux.x86_64.rpm I will add this information to the wiki installation page. If you are going to ask people to install that package from the nux repo, you should have them first install the nux-desktop repo from http://li.nux.ro/repos.html. It asks for several packages which are not available in TDE, epel, nor the default CentOS repos, but which are available via nux-desktop. I will double check using a fresh install, but I believe that having EPEL + RPMfusion is sufficient to install the xine-lib-extras-freeworld package alone without having the Nux repository configured. I actually don't have RPMFusion enabled here, I generally try to avoid mixing repos for fear of compromising stability. Besides, the nux repo doesn't interfere with my currently installed packages, where RPMFusion wants to upgrade some stuff from epel and base, hence I'd rather stick with nux. I'm sure others will feel the same way, so it may be a good idea to point this out when you are posting the new instructions. |
While I realize Xine is already available to RHEL-based distros, it seems incapable of of playing DVDs (even with libdvd{css, read, nav} (re)installed), reporting an unsupported MRL plugin. However, SMPlayer is fully capable of playing DVDs, both with and without DVD menus enabled. I have not seen this on Arch or Debian Squeeze & Wheezy. Therefor I am suggesting the inclusion of Xine in the TDE repos for RHEL with proper support for libdvd*.
