Strange. For me patch 082a0c06 help on Debian Squeeze and Wheezy.
I made a little change in conditions.
Please test it.

The patch does not help with mentioned problem => no need to push.
I see the same crash whether I open from "tdecmshell kcmgtk or kcontrol. I added this bug report to the R14 etherpad list and tagged as a regression. I saw this bug quite a while ago and had forgotten until I saw this bug report. Created attachment 1562 [details]

I tried to combine my previous patch and your current into one.
Potentially solves the same problem also for GTK2.
Please, test it.
