urpmi from journalctl
From this fresh minimal Mageia 5 installation, the attachment is the entire urpmi command history that eventually provided a TDE session to select in TDM, and enabled startx to start a TDE session. Which package actually tipped the scale I don't know, but apparently the Plymouth-dependent trinity-tdebase package is not the only means to getting a minimalist TDE installation installed.

Hello, in order to get Mageia wallpaper/icons, I added dependency to 'mageia-theme-Default' package in tdebase. This theme package requires plymouth, that's why you get plymouth installed alongside TDE. |
