Backtrace for segfault
kgtk-qt3-kde3 maye be the culprit. I uninstalled it and the problem was gone. Please see: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/pidgin-only-runs-as-root-855683/ Thanks for letting me know about that Luc. I went to apt-get remove kgtk-qt3-kde3 but it appears to involve a large number of other packages: The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: network-manager-kde-kde3 foomatic-db-gutenprint ijsgutenprint unison kdmtheme-kde3 adept-batch-kde3 openssl-blacklist ipsec-tools strongswan-ikev2 adept-updater-kde3 powernowd libfcgi0ldbl network-manager-strongswan openoffice.org-kde3 adept-kde3 adept-notifier-kde3 kubuntu-default-settings-kde3 kio-apt-kde3 network-manager-openvpn-gnome libstrongswan network-manager-vpnc libept0-kde3 network-manager-vpnc-gnome avahi-autoipd adept-manager-kde3 powermanagement-interface konq-plugins-kde3 vpnc openprinting-ppds libpkcs11-helper1 libdbus-1-qt3 adept-installer-kde3 cups-pdf openvpn strongswan-nm openvpn-blacklist network-manager-openvpn Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. The following packages will be REMOVED kgtk-qt3-kde3 kubuntu-desktop-kde3 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation, 258kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? I'm not sure that I want to remove the kubuntu-desktop-kde3 package in the process. I tried just temporarily moving libkgtk2.so which definitely gets rid of the segfault problem (albeit with a lot of errors around the place), now I'm just trying to get past a read error problem to make sure it's working problem. Thanks once again. This also makes google-chrome to cease upload / download operations. It opens GTK file dialog but nothing happens after dialog close. gtk-kde3 was deprecated and removed from the archive quite some time ago, so I am closing this report. |
