Bug still exists in 3.5.13. Seems related to bugs 372 and 634. Basically, device icons do not appear on the desktop until there is a device change event. Then the device icons finally appear. Oddly, the device icon placement is hard-coded to the second horizontal grid row, which is quite frustrating. That is, even after manually placing a device icon to the desired location, the next device change event moves all the device icons to the second horizontal grid row. Refer to bug report 392. When the desktop first loads after login, is there a way to simulate a device change event? That would force device icons to appear in the user's desktop. Update: Possibly this bug is resolved when we added hal and gamin support to the tdelibs build options. I now see USB device icons when inserted, which includes a digital camera. I do not see CD/DVD device icons and never see the popup asking how to handle the disk (bug report 634). The device icon placements still defaults to the second horizontal grid row, which is frustrating (bug report 392). Icons should appear where I save them on the desktop. Update: I now receive the popup when inserting an optical disk. My unmounted floppy device icon appears too. However, when I unmount a floppy, actually unmount any device, the icon automatically moves to the second horizontal row (bug report 392). Update: my floppy icon does not appear when the session starts. I again have to trigger a device event, such as mount a partiton through kwikdisk or insert a USB flash drive or optical disk. GIT short version 4395. This is just plain broken. When starting the session, no device icons of any type appear on the desktop at all until there is a device change event. Only the special icons (My Computer, My Documents, etc.) appear when the session starts. The patch submitted in GIT hash 43bb5b9 that resolved bug report 372 has also resolved this bug report (Slackware 13.1). I tested several device icons and now all appear when starting the session.
