By default, Bugzilla does not search the list of RESOLVED bugs.
You can force it to do so by putting the upper-case word ALL in front of your search query, e.g.: ALL tdelibs
We recommend searching for bugs this way, as you may discover that your bug has already been resolved and fixed in a later release.

Description dennis.schieferdecker 2009-11-09 08:41:17 CST
An installation of THE KDE 3.5 downmix of Kubuntu 3.5.10 Karmic from the downloadable iso files halted prematurely. After choosing the language and the option to install on a fresh system (or to try out Kubuntu without installation) the Kubuntu logo appears for a short while. Afterwards, the screen turns black and when the mouse is moved colorful ASCII symbols appear but otherwise nothing happens. Sometimes, not always, the Kubuntu logo can also be seen smaller with wrong colors and duplicates several times across the screen.

This has been tried on two real PCs (new as of last year with an Nividia Geforce graphics adapter, an Intel Core2Duo CPU and an Intel motherboard chipset) and on VirtualBox 3.0.8.

Confirming. This only happens on certain computers; I suspect a race condition between usplash, Xorg, and kdm due to the new Upstart scheme.
Comment 2 Timothy Pearson 2009-11-11 00:39:16 CST
I believe this problem is fixed in kdebase-kde3 4:3.5.10-2ubuntu8.

It was indeed a race condition in the kdm-kde3 Upstart file; essentially KDM was loaded on a udev trigger, and then reloaded on the graphics-device-added trigger. The file has been repaired such that it now properly handles multiple start commands (i.e. ignores the later ones).

If you find you still have the problem after updating your system, please reopen this bug!

Is kdebase-kde3 4:3.5.10-2ubuntu8 part of the current ISO for Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic KDE downmix? If so, the problem still persists. If not, a repackaged ISO should be provided to allow an installation at all.
Comment 4 Timothy Pearson 2011-12-21 01:50:23 CST
Karmic is no longer supported. Please use a more up to date installation image to install TDE.

Closing this bug as WONTFIX.
