By default, Bugzilla does not search the list of RESOLVED bugs.
You can force it to do so by putting the upper-case word ALL in front of your search query, e.g.: ALL tdelibs
We recommend searching for bugs this way, as you may discover that your bug has already been resolved and fixed in a later release.

Description Jay 2009-03-02 22:22:21 CST
Today I got a notification from adept-updater. There was a very long list of things to update, all appeared to be in the KDE3 package.

About halfway through it aborted with the error (something like) "could not complete install because of conflicts".

I ran dpkg --configure -a and it did a ton of removals. The tail end of the list I could see was icons.

It broke my system in a major way. When I went to reboot I noticed missing icons in the logout popup (though they returned after reboot).

Rebooting failed to restart KDE. I had to log in as root and then run kdm manually, which appeared to be the KDE4 one, so I assume the KDE3 one is gone.

My desktop background is missing.

Many icons are missing.

I HAVE NO SOUNDS! When I run Amarok it says "Amarok could not find any sound-engine plugins."

The panel image is corrupted.

The Google search box in konqueror is missing.

I don't know how many other things are messed up, but the update was a major failure. I'm not sure what to do. Should I reinstall your whole KDE3.5 package all over again?

See the last couple pages of posts here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=963695

Try updating again, and reboot your system. Also be sure to apply the display manager fix that I posted about in that thread (near the end).

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Thanks for your prompt reply.

When you say "update again", what do you mean? I tried running adept_manager, clicking Fetch Updates, but nothing came up.

Yes, that is what I meant. If there are no updates, then apply the display manager fix here http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6827022&postcount=326 and reboot. Some KDE3-specific icons will need to be reconfigured (e.g. the KDM icons may not show up); the reason for this is that the icon locations have changed and KDM, etc. have the full paths in their configuration files.

The /etc/X11/default... thing made it so it boots straight into kdm, though it looks different.

From your post of 12 hours ago I might be inclined to suffer through this until your changes are complete. But then I need to update everything again and I'm not sure what command to issue for that.

Will a new update come along?

Amarok is still broke. That's a drag.

All my akregator feeds are empty. All my korganizer events are gone. Are they still somewhere, but just in a different directory? I sure hope so. I wouldn't think your update would have changed stuff in my home directory.

I just wanted to say thanks for the last three updates. Most issues are solved. I still have some missing icons though. For example in konqueror, when viewing / in list mode, the 'home' and 'media' folders are generic icons, not even folder icons. I think these have special folder-like icons that seem to be missing. BTW, before your 3 updates I did do a reinstall of kubuntu-desktop-kde3, so I'm not sure where these icons come from.

If you apply the latest (hopefully final) updates, are your problems solved?

If not, can you try logging in as a newly created user and see if the same bugs exist?

Thanks!

I applied the new release.

The home icon is back, but the media one is still blank.

I logged in as another user and it was the same.

Are the icons in some isolated package that I can re-install?

Do I need to install links? I know you moved some things around (/opt).

It would be nice to know that everything is correct again, but honestly this is a minor problem.

Can you attach a screenshot of the affected application, with the problem icon marked? I will then see if the same problem exists on my clean-slate Intrepid test machine, and fix it if it does.

Thanks!

Well, now that I zoom in on it, it seems it is not the generic icon but rather an icon that looks like a hard drive (the small version is practically a plain gray rectangle, the larger one is more clear). That being the case I think maybe the icon is just different from the old one, not blank, so I feel silly now bothering you with this.

So I think we can close this ticket as I cannot pinpoint any particular problem right now. If I have any more issues I'll open another one.

Great job!

Hey, do you have a tip jar or something? It occurs to me how important this KDE3 package is to me as I wait for KDE4 to become useable (if ever). This seems like a lot of work and I think you deserve support. (Or maybe I should ask this publically on the forums to drop the hint... :)

Why yes, in fact, I do! :-) It's on my old home page here: http://www.pearsoncomputing.net/

It is a lot of work to maintain KDE3.5, but worth it to avoid the Vista/Mac clone called KDE4. ;-)

Again, no big deal, but the problem with the icon is still there. I just don't see it until a fresh restart (see first picture). Then after so much as a mouse-over the word "media" (or click), it appears (see second picture). This is in konqueror in tree-view mode.

Although this problem appeared after your update, I can't help but this it's not your problem. Who do you think I should report it to? The konqueror developers?
